NBA Stars Fined For Tweeting

Photobucket

The NBA fined NBA stars--Phoenix forward Amar'e Stoudemire, Charlotte centerTyson Chandler and Boston forward Rasheed Wallace--last week and over the weekend for "in-game tweets" and criticism over officials.

The Celtics' vet, Wallace, was hit with a $30,000 fine on Friday (Nov. 27) after he criticized refs following the team's win over Toronto.

Both Stoudemire and Chandler received $7,500 fines each for posting messages on their respective Twitter accounts during their games on Wednesday (Nov. 25), a violation of NBA rules.

Tweets were posted on Stoudemire's account (
@amareisreal) during the Suns' win over Memphis, while Chandler updated his Twitter account (@Tysonchandler) during the Bobcats' victory over Toronto.

The league
revealed their move to block players from "tweeting" during games in September, after the microblogging site grew in popularity over the last year.

"You want to make sure that pop culture doesn't intrude on what brought us here, which is the game, and that we show the right respect for the game," NBA commissioner David Stern said.

"We just need to make sure when it's OK to tweet and when it's not OK to tweet, so it, at least, focuses around the game.

"It would look unusual for a guy sitting on the bench to pick up his cell phone, and I think we can agree that he probably shouldn't be writing e-mails. It's not about Twitter; it's about the line of communication. That's what we're focusing on," he continued.

The White House released a picture today of Michaele Salahi shaking hands with the president despite earlier reports that the couple who allegedly crashed the state dinner never came in contact with Obama. This revelation comes just hours after the Secret Service took responsibility for the breech. Director Mark Sullivan told the AP that his agency failed to verify whether the couple was invited to the party and expressed his deep concern and embarrassment. He went on to say that measures have been taken to ensure this will not happen again.Despite that, the Secret Service has not ruled out bringing charges against Tareq and Michaele Salahi. The agency maintains they were not on the guest list despite protestations from the couple, who are auditioning for the Bravo reality show "The Real Housewives of DC", that they did not crash the party. Jennifer Hudson to Play Winnie Mandela in New Film:

Photobucket

After the still-talked-about success of Dreamgirls, actress and singer Jennifer Hudson has found her next big role: Winnie.

Hudson is set to star in a film based on the life of activist Winnie Mandela, which will be depicted from the Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob biography Winnie Mandela: A Life.

"I was compelled and moved when I read the script," Hudson told Variety. "Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I'm honored to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told."

Mandela's life is definitely full of complexities. The wife of South Africa's former president Nelson Mandela, Winnie is a paradoxical figure who supported a freedom fighter, and led her own activist movements, but was also convicted of fraud following a scandal involving the murder of a 14-year-old.

Winnie will be directed by Darrell J. Roodt, who's best known for his films Cry, The Beloved Country and Sarafina! --Linda Hobbs
